Why are robot covers so much fun? Is it the shiny metal skins? The fact that there is always so much action in them? The strong diagonal lines in the composition (look at the covers below and you'll see what I mean). Personally, I think it's the same thing as gorillas - they look like people, only not quite right, which appeals to a deep-seated visual instinct and scares us a little at the same time. Or makes us laugh, depending on the context. We've got several long runs of comics featuring robots as regular characters, plus the random robot covers shown below.
